Is Paris Burning? is the tenth and last mission in Commandos 2: Men of Courage. It is set in Paris, France. The main objective is to prevent bomb detonation.
Introduction[]
August 1944. Three months after the landings of Normandy more than half of France is under allied control. In the morning August 19 General Eisenhower sends the French 2nd Armoured Division, with the support of American troops, with the mission to liberate Paris. After four years of occupation the dream of millions of Frenchmen is about to become reality.
But Hitler has different plans. His orders are clear "Paris must only fall into enemy hands as a heap of rubble". General Dietrich Von Choltitz commander of the occupation troops of Paris is in charge of the demolition of the city. From his headquarters in the Hotel Meurice he oversees the labour of the German 813th Engineer Corps that has planted tonnes of explosives in the city.
Trivia[]
- The name of mission is the same as the film Is Paris Burning? about the liberation of Paris. It is a question reportedly asked by Hitler over a telephone to the general. The phrase was then used as the title of non-fiction book.
- You control all the Commandos you have played with in the other levels.
- This is the only level in Commandos 2 that you can drive a Panzer III tank in.
- The real Hotel Meurice does not stand next to the Eiffel Tower, it stands opposite the Tuileries Garden.
- The mission must occur at some time from the 23rd to 25th of August 1944. Dietrich von Choltitz got the orders on the 23rd, the first Allied forces entered the city on the 24th and he surrendered on the 25th. He may already have decided to not demolish Paris but the Commandos do not know.
